| Despite being widely distributed in South America and having relatively large populations, little is known about the trophic ecology of the South American Tern (Sterna hirundinacea) and Cabot's Tern (Thalasseus acuflavidus). In Brazil, South American and Terns Cabot's breed in mixed colonies from the state of Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina. Here, we describe results of a study of the feeding ecology of these two species during the reproductive seasons of April to October of 2003, 2005 and 2006 from Cardos Island, Santa Catarina, Brazil. | The specimens of Arenaeus cribrarius (Lamarck, 1818) used in this study were collected in the locality of Barra da Lagoa beach, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, in the period of April/1991 to March/1992. In this area temperature and salinity values were observed. A total of 341 samples, that 184 were male and 157 were female were collectted. The maturacion sexual stadium were measured (cm) and weightied (g). Expression of relation among weight of body (wt) and width of carapace (wid) was Wt=0,0567 Wid3,0494 on males and wt=0,074 Wid2,8795 on females. The relation length (Lt) width (wid) of carapace was Lt=0,4322. wid on males and Lt=0,4578. wid on females. |

| In the time period between May/92 to Abril/93, 602 (267 males and 335 females) specimens oi P. brasiliensis Latreille, 1817 were collected. The shrimps were captured by night using a hand net in áreas between 30 to 150 cm deep. The amplitude of length ranged from 1,3 to 13,7 cm, the highest frequencies of capture were registered during the Fali between the classes of 7,0 and 10,0 cm. The males present isometric growth and the females negative allometric one. The size of the pre-adult ranged from 8,8 cm for the females and 9,2 cm for the males. The recruiting occurs chiefly in the Summer with intense growth during the Fall-Winter period, reaching a climax with the migration of pre-adults to the ocean in midwinter. |

| Stellifer stellifer (Bloch, 1790) is one among the most abundant ictiofauna species which are caught by sea-bob-shrimp's artisanal fishery in Armação do Itapocoroy. Aiming to analyze its population structure, a total of 1459 specimens were collected from July/1996 to August/1997. Stellifer stellifer presented lengths varying between 3,7 and 17,7 cm, macroscopic sex differentiation started from 6,0cm, with a higher frequency of females (sex ratio = 1:3,2). The relationship between length and weight was Wt = 0,0073Lt3,1415. First maturation size was determined for females (7,5 cm) and males (8,1 cm). The fishery acts in a similar way on juveniles and adults. Stellifer stellifer presented two spawning seasons, one in spring and another in autumn. |

| Ecological studies including occurrence, relative abundance and spatial distribution of 15 species of Brachyura, as well as the fluctuation in the annual cycle are carried out in mangrove (27º 34' 14" and 27º 35' 31" L.S.; 48º 30' 07"and 48º 31' 33" L. W.), during the year 1986. The hydrological parameters temperature, salinity and pH of surface and intersticial waters were also studied. | In the period of January and December, 1995, there were collected by means of overtrawl, 12977 samples of macroinvertebrates and demersal fishes, in the Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha (SC), between the depths of 6 to 10 meters, in the periods of morning, afternoon, and evening. There were registered the incidence of 57 families, 80 kinds and 92 species distributed between the macroinvertebrates and demersal fishes. | The estuary is an important feeding and resting site for mixed flocks of coastal seabirds, limnological inhabitants and also edge inhabitants. Once in a month, three census were done on the bird fauna with two hours intervals within observations, during the period from January/96 to December/98. The results showed the presence of 45 species, where 45,7% were regularly observed, while 17,9 occurred seasonally and 36,4% were occasional in the census. The highest abundance occurred during the winter and spring months, and the lowest during the summer and autumn. The medium annual diversity index varied between 1,68 ± 0,36 and 1,82 ± 0,34. The highest similarity of fauna was observed between the years 1997 and 1998. |

| Callinectes ornatus (Ordway, 1863) é a espécie mais abundante de Portunidae, capturada como fauna acompanhante na pesca artesanal do camarão sete-barbas. Durante o período de Agosto de 1996 a Julho de 2002, os caranguejos foram monitorados mensalmente na Armação do Itapocoroy. C. ornatus mostrou flutuações sazonais na abundância com as maiores taxas na primavera e no inverno. A variação da população quando a largura da carapaça variou de 2,0 a 10,0 cm, e a presença de juvenis foi comum ao longo do ano. As espécies apresentaram crescimento alométrico positivo, com os machos e as fêmeas chegando à primeira maturação gonadal com 5,8 e 5,2 cm, respectivamente. A pesca artesanal na Armação do Itapocoroy atua com alta intensidade sobre o estoque adulto. |

| Marine communities in tropical regions contain a great diversity of species that play key roles in ecological processes. The observed bycatch fauna in artisanal fishing for the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) in the southwest Atlantic exceeds the quantity of commercial shrimp captured. This bycatch has not been previously inventoried extensively in Brazil, particularly in the State of Santa Catarina, where small-scale shrimp fisheries is a traditional activity and dominates the local fishing economy. | Studies on the growth of the blue crab C. danae were carried out by the analysis of size-frequency distributions, and the growth curves were determined for both sexes through Bertalanffy equation. 613 males and 511 females were obtained from 10 collecting sites of the lagoon, at night, monthly from January/88 to July/89. The growth curves in carapace width were described according to the following equations: Wid∞ = 14.0 (1-e-0,6975.t) for males and Wid∞ = 13.3 (1-e-0,6555.t) for females. The growth curves in body weigth were also determined, based on the equations of the growth curves and the relationship between body weight and carapace width. | From July 1996 to June 1997, in Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, monthly census were done in three areas of traditional fishery and Itacolomis islands. A total of 10021 seabirds were registered, belonging to eight species, five genus and four families. The average number of seabirds per dragging varied between 80,2 and 113,6. Sterna spp, appeared at first in 43,3% of the released by-catch, followed by Larus dominicanus Lichtenstein, 1823, Fregata magnificens Matheus, 1914, Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Humboldt, 1805) and Sula leucogaster Boddaert, 1783. | Xiphopenaeus kroyeri is the most exploited shrimp specie along Center-South coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil, by artisanal fishery. In the period from March/1996 to February/1997, 3965 shrimps were collected (1843 males and 2122 females) sampled by over-trawl, with the depth oscillating between 5 and 15 meters. Xiphopenaeus kroyeri shows seasonal fluctuations in its abundance with higher rates in autumn. The population's average total-length varied between 7.5cm and 9.1cm, and the presence of juveniles was common along the year. The males and females get to the first gonadal maturation with 7.4 cm and 9.0 cm length, respectively; these lengths were reached within 6 and 8 months of age. |

The shrimps were captured by night using a hand net in äreas between 30 to 150 cm deep. The abundance of P. paulensis is regulated mainly by the temperature, the summer being the season of greater profusion. The major recruiting period takes place in the Spring with shrimps measuring between 1,0 to 3,0 cm and approximately 2,0 months old.
